New Rules For Treating Chronic Pain: Addiction Free Solutions in the Era of Opioid Crisis

Self-Paced Digital Presentation Through PESI

This 6 Hour self-paced Webinar explores the often-misunderstood chronic pain cycle that if left untreated can sabotage effective chronic pain management. You will see how the chronic pain cycle leads to “remodeling” of the pain system including people developing an anticipatory pain reaction and learn how to effectively intervene.

By joining me you'll be able to…

  • Differentiate between the physiological and psychological/emotional pain symptoms and have appropriate management strategies for both types.
  • Learn how to help chronic pain sufferers move beyond anticipatory pain and break the chronic pain cycle.
  • Teach your clients how to better communicate about their pain by developing and using a verbal description 10-Levels of Pain Scale.
  •  Investigate reasons why the biomedical approach alone may be ineffective for the low outcome subset of chronic pain clients with coexisting disorders.
  •  Develop a treatment plan that helps clients let go of suffering and adequately addresses the psychological/emotional symptoms of their pain.
  •  Analyze the needs of clients as they explore the correlation of increased stress and worsening levels of pain and how to develop appropriate relaxation response skills to reduce their levels of stress and the perception of their pain.
  • Categorize at least five of the twelve denial patterns (psychological defense mechanisms) that can sabotage treatment outcomes.

This Webinar explores what most people who have never experienced suffering with chronic pain don’t know. That there are many secondary problems under the surface that sabotage chronic pain management. Learn how to look below the surface of living with chronic pain. Discover new recommendations favoring behavioral and Holistic treatments and help more people than ever before who are seeking drug-free solutions for their chronic pain.

This course also draws from the 2018 “American Society of Addiction Medicine Handbook: Pain and Addiction” – including Dr. Grinstead’s Chapter: “Self-directed Non-Pharmacological Management of Chronic Pain.”

Self-Care Planning and Codependency Healing for Healthcare Providers: We Must Practice What We Teach

This 2 Hour Webinar Is July 14, 2022 - 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time

This workshop is meant for  Healthcare Professionals to make sure they are practicing positive  self-care in order to be more effective with their patients.  For those  in a recovery process, they will learn to address major relapse triggers  for recovering healthcare professionals, such as poor self-care and  codependency. Many healthcare professionals are extremely motivated and  provide excellent care to their patients but often at a high personal  cost to their own well-being. Many healthcare providers have an ingrained  drive to put other peoples’ needs in front of their own—if they are  also in recovery this can be a major relapse trigger.

A  major purpose of this workshop is to help healthcare providers look at  their own personal self-care in four areas: 1) Biological; 2)  Psychological; 3) Social, and 4) Spiritual. They will score themselves  in these four areas and then develop a plan to improve their scores over  a three-to-six-month period.

We  will also explore the nature of codependency as a major relapse  trigger, how to recognize these tendencies and develop an action plan  for overcoming them, as well as identifying any potential red flags that  could lead people into a relapse episode.

By attending this presentation you will be able to:

  • Rate  your own level of functioning in four  areas—Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual and learn about some simple ways other  people have increased their levels in each of these areas.
  • Develop  and execute a four-part Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual treatment plan that  will improve your quality of life and increase their level of  functioning 30-40% over a three to six month period.
  • Identify and understand at least four personal relapse triggers related to your own codependency or poor self-care.
  • Identify  and map out at least one past poor self-care or codependency-related  incident that ended with negative consequences. You will then use that  to develop a future relapse prevention plan from the insight and  understanding gained from completing the mapping process

Interactive Dynamic Online 20 Hour Relapse Prevention Competency Certification Training

This workshop consists of 20 contact hours of online training presented by Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead who has been an Advanced Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS) since his initial training with Terence T. Gorski in 1991. As a Gorski-CENAPS® Trainer from 1996 to 2016 Dr. Grinstead has trained well over 40,000 health care providers. This training is based in part on the Gorski-CENAPS® Developmental Model of Recovery and Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead’s experience of almost four decades in the addiction treatment and relapse prevention arena.

This clinical skills training is for professional clinicians who want to learn how to help their clients identify and manage the warning signs and high risks situations that lead to relapse despite a commitment to sobriety. The main premise of this training is to start recovery with relapse prevention and start relapse prevention with denial management. You will learn that relapse is a process not and event and that there are many identifiable warning signs and high-risk situations (Relapse Justifications) that occur far in advance of alcohol and/or other drug use. This training is designed to provide competency in warning sign and high-risk situation identification and management for relapse-prone clients.

This is a two-part process including 20 Hours of online training and then completing the optional Competency Certification Portfolio. Competency Certification is awarded based on the ability to demonstrate competency during the training and to complete a Certification Portfolio demonstrating a full understanding of the Warning Sign Identification and Management process and the ability to apply these methods with a relapse-prone client using the Manualized Relapse Prevention Client Workbook.

Upon completing this Relapse Prevention Competency Training, you will be able to:

  1. Explain relapse as a process—not an event—and educate your clients that recognizing and managing early relapse warning signs is crucial step in stopping a potential relapse cycle.
  2. Identify and be able to develop a management plan for the six (6) symptoms of Protracted or Post Acute Withdrawal (PAW) as part of a strategic relapse prevention plan.
  3. Develop a strategic Craving Management plan by education your clients about the biological and psychological components of craving and utilize the nine (9) steps of an effective craving management plan that becomes a major component of a strategic relapse prevention plan.
  4. Look at denial differently by normalizing and “de-pathologizing” this human defense mechanism in order to explain it to the clients you serve.
  5. Understand and explain that Denial Management requires building a Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual foundation in order to reduce or illuminate a client’s risk of a chemical relapse.
  6. Develop and Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual foundation plan to help people better manage relapse triggers and help their clients maintain quality recovery and lower their risk of relapse.
  7. Implement a three-part Relapse Intervention Plan (R.I.P.) that includes developing strategic interventions for your client, your client’s clinician, and the clients three accountability partners.
  8. Teach your clients to understand and utilize a 17 item Relapse Indicator Checklist on a daily basis in order to reduce the client’s risk of a potential relapse episode.
  9. Assist your clients to identify and manage their most important High-Risk Relapse Indicator (aka relapse warning sign) by utilizing a Problem/Solution Cognitive Behavioral Restructuring process.
  10. Teach your clients how to develop a strategic recovery plan utilizing community resources that is specifically designed to help them identify and manage future Warning Signs and High-Risk Situations.
